Geothermal heat pump

RENESCO accumulated rich experience in implementation of ground source heat pumps projects.We believe that alternative energy sources are the future and the important role of the district heating system.

Advantages of the ground source heat pump:

  • Five of our renovated buildings are equipped with geothermal ground heat pumps (vertical configuration) individually as well as in combination with the central heating system warm our renovated buildings.
  • Installation of ground source heat pumps with vertical probes is more expensive compared to traditional heating systems, but thanks to low running costs, the investment pays for itself within 5 to15 years.
  • System equipment working life is estimated at 25 years for inside components and 50+ years for the ground loop.
  • Ground heat pumps provide a convenient supply of heat and hot water using the top layer of the earth's crust as a source of heat. Geothermal energy does not depend on the season, it is constant - about 6-7 degrees above zero. So, the ground heat pump energy is a renewable energy resource.

 Ground heat pumps are one of the most efficient technologies providing a convenient supply of heat and hot water. They have efficiencies rated according to their coefficient of performance. It's a way of determining how much kW of thermal energy can get by consuming 1kW of electricity for its operation. The figure varies from COP 3-5.

  • > Implemented project example – Stacijas street 28, Sigulda <

      Initially, a special project apartment building of series 318 in Stacijas Street  used coal as a fuel source. The coal boiler was produced in 1983, it was outdated and operated with low efficiency, the average coal consumption was around 120 tons. Building residents hired a stoker whose job was to maintain heating systems, to heat the building, to clean the boiler and to keep coal reserves regularly. One more disadvantage of using coal as a fuel is  a large number of ash as a result of coal burning, ash covered the building facade and deteriorated facade appearance. So the building was physically depreciated and lost its thermal capacity.

    During the comprehensive renovation process the ground source heat pumps with vertical probes were installed. Ground source heat pumps were unable to cover the building heating load, so it was designed in combination with the central heating system.

    As a result, the building got a completely new, attractive visual appearance and its lifetime was extended by 30-40 years. The new heating system is no longer based on the combustion process, so that the residents will no longer face with the problem of grimy buildings. As well as a new heating system is able to operate autonomously.

    2013th/2014th season:

    - From May to September only heated towel rail is working;

    - Starting from October heated towel rail and heating are working;

    - Heat consumption was 121 MWh / year (56 * kWh/m2/year);

    - Heat cost ~ 38 EUR / MWh without VAT

     - COP ~ 3,4
